With his unmistakable groove-driven style and sharp sense for atmosphere, Paons returns to SNOE with “Savvy EP”. This is a release packed with attitude and those little unexpected details that keep you locked in from start to finish.
We celebrate with the next edition of our SNOE Affairs mix series where Paons delivers a journey full of rolling rhythms, cheeky twists and late-night energy. We also sat down with him for a chat about the story behind “Savvy EP”, his creative process in the studio and the elements that make a track truly timeless.
1) How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before?
My music is quite open to various genres but rooted in electronic music. It has a somewhat minimal feel, is always melodic, and sits somewhere between a listening experience and the dancefloor..
2) What, for you, is the purpose of art?
Art is so incredibly diverse. Sometimes it points a finger at something. Sometimes it is uncomfortable, sometimes loud, sometimes quiet. It reveals our inner selves and transports emotions. And sometimes simply helps us get through the day.
For me, it is about a certain feeling or mood that is created and transported. A moment where we linger together for a short while.
3) We love your new release. What was your inspiration for the EP?
New productions always start with a jam session in the studio. Sometimes it’s a beat from a drum machine; other times, it’s a sample that grabs me and gets manipulated. With “Savvy,” it was the vocal which reminded me a bit of Daft Punk along with the minimal beat that runs through the track.
4) What kind of gear tends to spark ideas for you, and does that change what kind of track you end up writing?
I work a lot with Elektron drum machines, combined with a Moog bass synth triggered by a sequencer. That definitely has an influence; it results in a rather static, more old-school electro beat to start with.
5) Do you think it’s harder now to cut through with music alone?
Every era has had its own trends and distinct challenges. Nowadays, sharing music is much faster and easier, though this does lead to an oversaturation of music. It is great that almost everyone has access to music today, whether they want to create it themselves or simply listen to it, but, of course, one still has to find the right music or one’s own audience.
6) What helps you stay grounded when the algorithm rewards surface over substance?
A smile and the thought of being allowed to do what you do.
7) What does your name mean?
My artist name, Paons, is a combination derived from my real name, Patrick Steppons. I settled on the name once I saw that “Paons” means “peacocks” in French.
8) What is your favourite Norwegian word? 😉
Ha, good question! I think I go with “Agurktid”
