We are happy to welcome the extraordinary producer and DJ Andres Marquez to the SNOE label family. His new "Bunker" EP is what we are all about here at SNOE. To celebrate his debut on the label he is joining our SNOE Affairs series with a massive mix. In addition to the mix, we sat down for a short interview to talk about this and that and some things that are currently on his mind.
How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before?
If I had to describe my music to someone who has never heard me before, I would say that it is a mixture of emotions and thoughts turned into sound. Each song has its own intense and vibrant energy. I like to play with different genres, but always with the goal of telling a story or transmitting a unique sensation. It’s as if the words that you can’t express with speech you can feel through the melodies.
To get into a creative flow, I always start by drawing inspiration from genres, such as rock, metal, and jazz. I love exploring different musical styles because each one has a unique energy that I can subtly integrate into my productions.
Rock and metal, for example, help me capture the intensity and aggressiveness that I sometimes look for in my tracks, especially in the rhythms and the strength of the bass. I am inspired by their raw and powerful structures, transferring that attitude to my productions, whether with a forceful groove or more distorted sounds. On the other hand, jazz gives me a freedom that allows me to improvise and play with harmony and rhythms in a more open way. The rhythmic complexity of jazz gives me many ideas for creating unexpected patterns, while its fluidity inspires me to make the elements in my tracks feel organic and constantly moving.
Once I absorb these influences, I enter the studio and start experimenting with beats, synthesizers and samples, always looking for that balance between what inspires me and my own sound.
We love your new release. What was your inspiration for the EP?
For this EP, I was inspired by the classic style of techno, but always with a focus on the groove, on those hypnotic and enveloping rhythms that catch you from the first beat. I wanted to pay homage to the roots of the genre, to those minimalist and powerful sounds that defined the early stages of techno, but at the same time put my own spin on it, adding layers of energy and fluidity.
What is the one thing you can’t be without in the studio?
I can’t be in the studio without a cup of coffee and bread. It keeps me focused and energized, it’s a little comfort that helps me relax during long creative sessions.
What makes you laugh?
In the studio, what makes me laugh the most are the unexpected moments, like when a sound or sample turns out much funnier than I planned, or when I’m experimenting with effects and something weird comes out.
In which ways could the scene improve in the future?
To improve the scene in the future, I think encouraging more collaboration and diversity would be key. Promoting spaces where artists from different genres, cities and cultures can collaborate could lead to fresh and innovative sounds. It’s also important to make music more accessible, providing opportunities to emerging talent who may not have the resources or connections to break into the industry.
What are your guilty pleasures?
My guilty places are horror and science fiction movies. I really enjoy the suspense and unexpected twists of horror, as well as the futuristic stories and technological speculations of science fiction. I love immersing myself in these worlds and exploring how plots develop in such unique settings.
What is your favourite Norwegian word? 😉
KOS I really liked this word, to give a simple but concrete meaning of what life is.
We just got a fresh mix from him for our SNOE Affairs series, enjoy this ride:
